DestinE Digital Twin Visualization: A Fascinating Challenge
Presenter
DescriptionThe development of AR/VR software for digital twin visualization presents an exciting challenge for software developers and designers to create engaging immersive and useful experiences for users. Digital twin is an evolving concept, but some directions are already well established with visualization and interaction featuring prominently. The visualization challenge arises because on one side there is a vast amount of data to navigate and choose from, while on the other side there are different target “stakeholders”: from scientists, to decision makers, from technology enthusiasts to the general public. These groups are interested, for example, in the impact of extreme weather events or climate change on the environment and society, to enable better planning and decision-making. Fulfilling all these requirements simultaneously presents serious technical challenges considering the added complexity of an extremely rapid technological progress in this field. Our project with ECMWF is addressing these challenges by developing a software infrastructure that leverages frameworks from both the geospatial community and the gaming industry, aiming at these objectives: letting expert users to freely choose among the available data, set up scenarios and build data driven “shows” or “stories” about any phenomenon they wish; letting regular users to explore existing “shows” and “stories”.
