The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland, conducting cutting-edge research in three main fields: matter and materials, energy and the environment and human health. PSI develops, builds and operates complex large research facilities. Every year, more than 2500 scientists from Switzerland and around the world come to PSI to use our unique facilities to carry out experiments that are not possible anywhere else. PSI employs 2100 people and is part of the ETH Domain. Together with strong partners in the ETH Domain, PSI’s research division “Scientific Computing, Theory, and Data” focuses on the development of new computer and data technology. Comprehensive computer simulations, modelling, theoretical calculations and data analysis represent an essential component of the natural and engineering sciences. This is all the more true at PSI with its globally unique ensemble of large research facilities. Both their operations and the experiments that take place here produce large amounts of data.
