Fully Kinetic Modelling of the Tokamak Scrape-Off Layer
DescriptionPlasma edge in magnetic confinement fusion plasma devices consists of a mixture of a multi-component plasma and neutral particles interacting nonlinearly with each other, as well as with plasma facing components of fusion device. Modelling of such a system represents an extremely challenging task requiring a multidisciplinary study. In the present work we describe our plans and first attempts in exascale supercomputing to enable multiscale simulations of plasma edge. We consider the example of PIC MC (Particle-in-Cell Monte Carlo) code BIT1 and steps of its adaptation for exascale modelling, consisting of algorithmic restructuring, porting to GPU and development of new numerical approaches.
