Code and Community: Challenges and Opportunities

DescriptionThe last decade of scientific computing has seen increased interdependence between scientific code and scientific communities. Scientific code provides a shared language for researchers in a scientific community to communicate, explore, collaborate and experiment with complex problems, new ideas and approaches, leading to the evolution in their scientific fields. The open-source nature of many scientific codes allows for input and contributions from a diverse range of individuals and communities and at the same time facilitate the development of new grassroots scientific communities, driven by the interests and needs of users. However, several challenges exist in this ecosystem of scientific code and scientific communities. In this talk, we will first discuss the overall importance, need and benefits that arise from this mutual relationship of code and communities. We then explore broad challenges (including but not limited to: community adoption of code, democratic access to scientific knowledge across cultures, scientific code and the test of time etc), and will delve deeper into some of these broad challenges, explore what opportunities and solutions can perhaps alleviate these challenges.
