SUMMARY:Understanding the Computing and Analysis Needs for Resiliency of P
ower Systems from Severe Weather Impacts
DESCRIPTION:Paper\n\nJibonananda Sanyal (National Renewable Energy Laborat
ory); Melissa Dumas, Sangkeun Lee, and Supriya Chinthavali (Oak Ridge Nati
onal Laboratory); Jennifer King (National Renewable Energy Laboratory); an
d Srijib Mukherjee (Oak Ridge National Laboratory)\n\nAs the frequency and
intensity of severe weather has increased, its effect on the electric gri
d has manifested in the form of significantly more and larger outages in t
he United States. This has become especially true for regions that were pr
eviously isolated from weather extremes. In this paper, we analyze the wea
ther impacts on the electric power grid across a variety of weather condit
ions, draw correlations, and provide practical insights into the operation
al state of these systems. High resolution computational modeling of speci
fic meteorological variables, computational approaches to solving power sy
stem models under these conditions, and the types of resiliency needs are
highlighted as goal-oriented computing approaches are being built to addre
ss grid resiliency needs.\n\nDomain: Engineering, Computer Science, Machin
