SUMMARY:Optimisation of Lattice Simulations Energy Efficiency
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nAntonin Portelli (University of Edinburgh)\n\
nA total of 196 out of the 500 supercomputers in the world have submitted
power measurements, so we know that they consume together around 3 billion
kWh per year. The energy in a supercomputer is mainly consumed by its com
puting elements (e.g. CPUs & GPUs), and power consumption is directly rela
ted to the intensity of the calculations running on the machine. Processor
s perform operations synchronised with an internal clock, and the energy c
onsumption is directly related to this clock frequency. A current general
trend in high-performance computing hardware is to manufacture processors
so that they constantly try to operate at maximum possible frequencies, in
order to achieve work faster. This is a design that is potentially wastin
g energy, so it is important to question whether a compromise should be fo
und between performance and energy efficiency for current and future infra
structures.\n\nDomain: Physics\n\nSession Chair: Luigi Del Debbio (Univers
