SUMMARY:Adaptation of ECMWF’s Integrated Forecasting System to GPU-Acceler
 ated EuroHPC Systems
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nBalthasar Reuter and Michael Lange (ECMWF)\n\
nThe European Commission’s Destination Earth programme is an ongoing effor
t to create digital replicas of the Earth system, with two high-priority D
igital Twins (DT) available by the end of the first phase in 2024 that are
set to run on pre-Exascale systems of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU).
ECMWF’s Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) underpins the Continuous Extr
emes DT and is used as one of two Earth-system models in the Climate Chang
e Adaptation DT. The porting process of IFS and, in particular, the adapta
tion to the AMD and NVIDIA GPUs present in the LUMI and LEONARDO supercomp
uters of the JU, is intimately linked to an internal project at ECMWF that
aims to achieve both compatibility and performance portability for accele
rators and future architectures. A combination of data abstraction APIs, d
omain-specific libraries, such as Atlas, and bespoke source-to-source tran
slation tools, such as Loki, are employed to allow for an incremental adap
tation of the code base alongside scientific development. This talk descri
bes the effort of adapting IFS to the target systems, presents the current
status and discusses challenges and lessons learned in the process.\n\nDo
