Adaptation of ECMWF’s Integrated Forecasting System to GPU-Accelerated EuroHPC Systems
DescriptionThe European Commission’s Destination Earth programme is an ongoing effort to create digital replicas of the Earth system, with two high-priority Digital Twins (DT) available by the end of the first phase in 2024 that are set to run on pre-Exascale systems of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU). ECMWF’s Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) underpins the Continuous Extremes DT and is used as one of two Earth-system models in the Climate Change Adaptation DT. The porting process of IFS and, in particular, the adaptation to the AMD and NVIDIA GPUs present in the LUMI and LEONARDO supercomputers of the JU, is intimately linked to an internal project at ECMWF that aims to achieve both compatibility and performance portability for accelerators and future architectures. A combination of data abstraction APIs, domain-specific libraries, such as Atlas, and bespoke source-to-source translation tools, such as Loki, are employed to allow for an incremental adaptation of the code base alongside scientific development. This talk describes the effort of adapting IFS to the target systems, presents the current status and discusses challenges and lessons learned in the process.
