Lessons Learned Deploying Galaxy at a Neutron Scattering Facility
DescriptionOak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to answer big science questions about the fundamental nature of materials at the atomic scale. It does this using two of the most advanced neutron scattering facilities in the world: the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The efficient analysis of neutron scattering data is essential to achieving this mission. We are currently halfway through a three-year project to develop a platform that will enable the creation of an ecosystem of scientific data analysis applications. We are leveraging the Galaxy platform to create Calvera, a data analysis platform that will form the central component of a neutron science application ecosystem. In this talk, we will outline how we have been working to overcome the many challenges we face to achieve this goal. We will discuss the data management and computational resource requirements necessary to effectively analyze our data, as well as detail some of the unique aspects of the neutron scattering data analysis environment. Finally, we will show how we have incorporated all this into an environment that employs a seamless approach to meeting the neutrons data analysis needs of the laboratory.
