Interdomain Digital Twins – Challenges and Opportunities Are Two Sides of the Same Coin
Presenter
DescriptionDigital twins are decision making tools at their heart and for decisions to be impactful they must manifest in the physical world. This explains why the goal for digital twins in the environmental sector is not digital twins of the environment but environmentally aware digital twins – digital twins of physical assets and/or societal processes, coupled with environmental factors. Such digital twins can be used to make decisions and take actions that make tangible difference in the world. This framing of environmental digital twins show how many of the technical challenges are to do with transfer of information between different conceptual domains. The models and data for these different domains may well by physically located in different locations presenting further challenges. Bidirectional coupling, quantifying uncertainty, latency, standards, information security, the list of challenges goes on. Interdomain digital twins will allow answering of previously un-addressable challenges for the benefit of humanity. The technical challenges listed are simply the other side of this coin and well worth addressing for the benefits. This talk will explore this line of thinking, these challenges, and the work of the UK Met Office in this area.
